If you enter Vinton from the south, you can see a huge American flag flying and you know that's where John's Qwik Stop is located. Unfortunately for Vinton, things will be changing at the end of the year.

John Ketchen has prided himself, and rightly so, in the ability to have been a local business that supported his community. It has been a privilege for Ketchen to have been able to meet the requests of several in the community. "We have never turned down a single request in 27 years," said Ketchen. Assisting the Vinton Parks & Rec Department, Virginia Gay Hospital, Vinton-Shellsburg Community Schools, Vinton Palace and too many extracurricular activities to remember, it is with a heavy heart that Ketchen announced on Wednesday afternoon his plans to sell John's Quick Stop.

Ketchen said that A&W will be closing at the end of the month and the Godfather's chain will be closing in the 3rd week of December. Ketchen also would like to encourage residents to use up any gift cards for the car wash and patron points that they might have before the end of the year.

Ketchen said, "Vinton has been a great community and I've been glad to have been part of it. Unfortunately, the time has come to step away from the business."

Plans are underway for Casey's General Store to take over ownership sometime in early 2023.

KT November 17, 2022, 1:04 pm Sorry to see John selling his business. We sure understand when the time comes to be headache free and retire and enjoy life a little more. Any business takes lots of work to keep running smoothly. Best Wishes to you John and Thank You for all you have done in making Vinton a great place to live. Hope Casey's is as nice as John's Qwik Stop!!
RR November 17, 2022, 1:41 pm Is this some type of terrible April Fools joke? This is terrible news for Vinton.
CR November 17, 2022, 2:35 pm Best of luck to you John
RE November 17, 2022, 3:06 pm Ii am extremely saddened at this. I really hate that the big chain stores won out over local. When considering places to buy a house, Vinton was one of my top choices mainly due to the variety of business and food options so to be losing this and everything he has done for the community is a major blow for the town. Will be greatly missed and wish that someone not chain store could have purchased and kept it going.
BT November 17, 2022, 3:30 pm Enjoy your retirement!! Does this mean that the Casey’s on 218 will be changing location?

Editor’s note: That’s unknown.

JR November 18, 2022, 10:15 am So sad to see these businesses leaving Vinton. Loved the ice cream flavors at A&W and all the other offerings from John's. Enjoy your retirement. We'll miss you.

TR November 21, 2022, 12:27 pm This is horrible for the town of vinton. I understand why. Huge down fall for the town of Vinton. There's got to be someone who is willing to take over.
BJ November 22, 2022, 3:11 am I am a little late seeing this news. I am sorry to see JQS close but I do understand the reasons. Ever since my late husband and moved to the area in 2009, John’s was always a staple in our lives. John was very kind to my husband, giving him odd jobs to do so we had some extra money. When I received an anonymous card with a $100 BP gift card in it after my husband passed away, I always suspected John was the source. Best of luck in your newest adventure John and family! Thank you for all you have done!
