A Mother's Transformation

Victoria decided she needed to make changes to provide a better life for her unborn child and was admitted into the Heart of Iowa residential treatment program on 3/03/2021. In the beginning, she started using Meth by way of smoking it and then, later on, became addicted to using it via IV. She also experienced some mental health issues and received assistance with managing it and she experienced domestic violence in previous relationships, including the one with her unborn child's father. Due to these factors, she lost her job, became homeless and was living in her car.

That is when she decided to make the call and she was admitted into Heart of Iowa. She was four months pregnant and desperately needed to make a change to provide a better life for her unborn child. Victoria attended all required meetings and group sessions and graduated from Heart of Iowa to the Halfway House program on 5/22/2021. While in treatment, she worked on her parenting skills and anger management. She established healthy boundaries in her relationships and learned to say no.

Victoria was enrolled in the Grants for the Benefit of Homeless Individuals (GBHI) on 6/25/2021. The grant provided her assistance with gas cards and maternity clothing. Victoria gave birth to a healthy baby boy on 8/18/2021, while still enrolled in the halfway program at Heart of Iowa. She was able to move into The Way Home on 11/1/2021 with her son. Once she moved into The Way Home, the GBHI grant was able to assist Vanessa with getting home furnishings, household supplies and basic needs items.

Victoria enrolled and completed CNA classes and is now a CNA for a local nursing home. Victoria continues to attend weekly group and individual sessions at The Way Home and she also attends a minimum of three NA meetings with CRUSH a week. She works full-time and is happy with her career choice. She states that coming to ASAC was the best thing for her and her child and she has been sober since she began treatment at the Heart of Iowa on 3/3/2022!
