Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in Washington County, along with the Washington County Women in Agriculture Advisory Board, will hold the Women in Ag Farm Crawl on Friday, Aug. 22, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
"This event is a great opportunity for women in agriculture to network and learn from various farming operations together," said Rebecca Vittetoe, extension field agronomist for Iowa State.
The farm crawl will feature four tour stops in northern Washington County and southern Johnson County:
- West Fork Farmstead, West Chester - This multi-generational family farm has used diversification to attract the next generation back to the farm. The farm is operated by Brian and Nancy Wilson along with their daughters, Claire and Natasha. They produce grass-fed beef, heritage pork, pastured chicken and duck eggs, pastured broilers and raw honey.
- Twin County Produce Auction and Stringtown Grocery, Kalona - A brief stop at the Twin County Produce Auction will be followed by a trip to the nearby Stringtown Grocery, an Amish store.
- Miller Homestead Cooking, Kalona (lunch) - Enjoy a traditional Amish meal while learning about the Amish community. Jams and homemade bread will be available for purchase.
- HB Flowers and Beef LLC, Tiffin - The final stop will be at a local family farm that produces home-grown flowers and local beef. Owners of HB Flowers and Beef LLC will share about their farm and their passion for cut flowers. Cut flower arrangements will be available for purchase following the tour.
Registration for the Women in Ag Farm Crawl is $50 and can be completed online or by calling the ISU Extension and Outreach Washington County office at 319-653-4811. Spots are limited, and registration will close either when spots are filled or by Aug. 14.
Participants will meet at the ISU Extension and Outreach Washington County office between 8-8:20 a.m., and the tour bus will leave for the first stop at 8:30 a.m. The bus will return to the extension office by 4 p.m.
The Women in Ag Farm Crawl is being made possible in large part thanks to ISU Extension and Outreach and the Azariah and Martha Foster Heritage Endowment.
