If you are a resident of Vinton and someone engaged in strengthening our community, the headline sentence may have caused some irritation. “Everyone” knows why we choose to live here.
But if the reader lives outside the community, it could be a good question in need of a solid answer. Why would someone choose to start a business or buy a home in Vinton? Or, why should I visit Vinton for community celebrations, choose Vinton for my healthcare, enroll my children in the Vinton-Shellsburg schools, or choose to buy goods and services from Vinton’s merchants and service providers?
The “Showcase” publication we created for the holiday shopping season was a first step toward providing solid answers to those questions. As we move forward we’ll be creating “Showcase” publications featuring our schools, healthcare providers, our businesses, and one featuring our community celebrations; Party-In-The-Park, the Cruise, the Benton County Fair, and Boomfest.
Showcase publications are designed to be ambassadors for everything positive about our community. Sent through the postal service to 10,000 mailboxes in all the towns surrounding Vinton, Showcase publications will introduce what Vinton offers to both rural residents and residents of nearby communities. We will also be posting all the Showcase content on both Vinton Today and Vinton Unlimited’s website, extending our reach even further.
Vinton Today is the fourth result of searching on Google for Vinton, Iowa, just after Vinton Unlimited. Posting Showcase content for download or viewing on both sites assures that someone interested in Vinton can easily access excellent information about our community.
So why should this matter to you? We hope potential advertisers understand that supporting “Showcase” is more than just buying an ad. You’re supporting a robust community development effort. As a resident concerned with the future of our community, we hope you will support Vinton Unlimited with an individual membership so VU can continue to promote our community.
In the hundreds of square miles surrounding Vinton are farmers who will one day choose to sell or rent their land, and move “to town”.
Which town will they choose? Vinton, Van Horne, Urbana, La Porte City?
Some residents of larger communities nearby would like their children to grow in the relative safety and security of a small town. They appreciate the school environment a small community offers. They may have retired parents who would enjoy the lower cost of living and slower pace small communities provide, along with the opportunity to stay close to their children and grandchildren.
How will they become aware of Vinton? What will their initial impressions be?
In print and online, we hope you will help deliver great information about our community and a wonderful first impression to those who might someday choose to live in Vinton. After all, there are a lot of good reasons someone might choose to live in Vinton, but not everyone knows what they are.

CLJanuary 16, 2012, 8:45 amEven though we\'ve geen gone now for over 15 years (yikes)...In my small circle of Cedar Rapids work friends we call Vinton \"the center of the universe\" because, eventually it seems, we can all come up with some tie to Vinton no matter who we\'re talking to/about! Keep up the good work in promoting a great place to live, work and raise a family!
