Everyone likes to win.

You never go into a game thinking “Hmmm…..I really hope I lose this one.”

We’re winners.

Our sports teams are focused on it, our political leaders thrive on it, and our economy depends on it.

The United States wouldn’t be the great country it is without freedom of competition and the opportunities to either win (thrive) or lose (dissolve).

So, the question is, “How do I choose who I want to win and what am I willing to do to help that happen?”

When watching a sporting event, about all you can do to help your team win is cheer louder, clap harder, and whistle with more piercing noises than the guy next to you.

But what about when it comes to our local economy? How can we make sure Vinton, Iowa continues to win in this yo-yo-like econom

y where no one really seems to know what’s going on or who is ahead? The best way, and the easiest way is to continue to support your local businesses. Shop around the town you live in and support your neighbors. So, here’s the goal: On the Third Thursday of every month, spend $30 in Vinton (we’ll call it “Third Thursday’s $30 Challenge”).

It doesn’t matter how or where in Vinton…just spend it somewhere local. Make it a challenge or better yet, a tradition in your family. Every third Thursday, go out to eat a local restaurant, grab a couple of movies, do your grocery shopping, renew your gym membership, have a date night with your spouse, send your wife off to buy new article of clothing, buy your husband a new tool, take the kids golfing (mini-golfing if you prefer).

It doesn’t matter what you do, just do it on the Third Thursday of every month and do it in Vinton. If you can’t spend $30 right now, then do what you can and just make sure it’s here in town.

Many of our businesses are already open late on Thursdays so you even have a couple of extra hours to reach the goal. So, cheer Vinton on. Support your local businesses and neighbors. And join in the “Third Thursday’s $30 Challenge.”

By the way, it’s on May 20th this month!
