Each year East-Central Iowa Rural Electric Cooperative sends two selected juniors from 16 area high schools to represent ECI REC at the Iowa Rural Electric Youth Tour of Washington, D.C., in June. This year two young men were chosen:

Dalton Schmit, a junior attending Jesup High School, is excited to travel to the capitol. Schmit's parents are Chris and Rachel Weber from the Independence area. Dalton has been involved in track and baseball, was a student of the month, has received a 4.0 award, and served as class president. He is a member of St. Athanasius High School Youth Group and participates in numerous other activities.

Parker Oltrogge will join Schmit and other youth from across the country on the Youth Tour. Oltogge is a junior at Vinton/Shellsburg High School. His parents are Allan and Pamela from the Shellsburg area. Oltrogge is active in show choir, track, band, cross country, and many other activities.

East-Central Iowa REC will be sponsoring these two students on an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. June 15-21, 2012. Approximately 1,000 youth participants from across the nation will visit historical sites, explore the Smithsonian Museums, meet Iowa’s congressional leaders, spend a day on Capitol Hill, cruise down the Potomac River, learn about electric cooperatives and meet students from many other states on Rural Electric Youth Day.

East-Central Iowa REC provides power to people in Benton, Black Hawk, Bremer, Buchanan, Clayton, Delaware, Fayette, Linn, Tama, Johnson and Iowacounties. Iowa’s electric cooperatives provide power in each of the state’s 99 counties to approximately 650,000 people.
