Auditions for ACT I’s upcoming production of Dates with a Nut, written by Thomas P. Johnson and Meg Merckens, will be held Sunday, January 11 at 2:00 pm at the ACT I Centre, 906 E. Avenue, Vinton, in the second floor rehearsal hall.
Only two actors will be needed for the production, one male and one female. Ages are flexible and could vary from 35 – 70. Both roles are very substantial and challenging, and will showcase the acting and comedic talents of the selected performers.
Dates with a Nut is a delightful farce, but also a warm and memorable story. A lonely widower is ready to start dating again, but isn’t sure how to go about it. He decides to risk an Internet dating service, but it doesn’t take long before he realizes he’s in way over his head with the three women with whom her has been matched. Aided by the waitress at the local café where he takes each of his dates, he tries to make sense of his hilariously frustrating situation.
As a comedic twist, all four women’s roles are played by the same actress. The comedy never lets up in a perfect mix of romantic comedy and slapstick.
Dates with a Nut was written by Thomas P. Johnson, founding director of both the Old Cremaery Theatre and Iowa Theatre Artists Company; and his wife, long time area professional actress Meg Merckens. The couple has produced the show several times, but this will be the first production ever of the show that hasn’t featured Meg in the cast. ACT I is delighted to have the honor of producing the first ever amateur production of this script and it promises to be a huge treat for our audience.
