The Luther College Concert Band, one of the Midwest's touring collegiate wind ensembles, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 24, at the Vinton-Shellsburg High School Auditorium,210 West 21st Street, Vinton, Iowa. Theperformance is part of the Concert Band's 2018 Midwest Tour.

The concert is open to the public with a freewill donation taken at the door. There is no charge for students.

Vinton-Shellsburg High School graduate Kendra Peterson is a member of the Concert Band. Peterson, Luther class of 2020, plays clarinet.

The program features a range of both traditional and contemporary band literature, including "Centennial Celebration Fanfare" by John Carnahan, "Lullaby for Noah" by Joseph Turrin, "Gumsuckers March" by Percy Grainger, "Dance Movements" by Philip Sparke, "Danzon No. 2" by Arturo Marquez, "Starsplitter" by Philip Rothman, "Two-Lane Blacktop" by James David, and "Stars and Stripes Forever" by John Philip Sousa.

The Luther College Concert Band was formed in 1878, laying the foundation for what would become the college's long-standing tradition of musical excellence. Directed by Joan deAlbuquerque, Concert Band is now one of the oldest touring organizations in the nation. The ensemble tours every year, with international travel every four years. Nearly 60 student musicians, representing a variety of academic majors, perform with the band. Many are also involved in choir, orchestra or a jazz ensemble.

deAlbuquerque has served as director of bands at Luther College since 2011. She earned a Doctor of Musical Arts in wind conducting from the University of North Texas as a student of Eugene Migliaro Corporon. She holds a master's degree in wind conducting and a Bachelor of Arts in music education from Michigan State University.

Luther is home to one of the largest collegiate music programs in the world with six choirs, three bands, three orchestras, two jazz bands and nearly 800 student musicians. Luther students participate in large ensembles, faculty-coached chamber groups, private lessons and master classes. More than 250 music majors study music theory/ear training, history, education, composition, jazz, church music and performance.
