Elizabeth (Lizzy) Moen, a 2012 Vinton-Shellsburg graduate, will perform from 1-2 p.m. Saturday, July 21, on the Free Stage of the Great Jones County Fair.

Moen has been singing for years, both in school projects and individually. She most recently performed during Party in the Park, where she was chosen as the winner of the "Riverside's Got Talent" event.

While she sings a variety of musical styles, Moen said she plans to do a lot of Johnny Cash songs at the Jones County Fair.

"Well it's the Great Jone's County Fair, which I have heard is pretty fun," she said. I have never been to it, but I called because I was interested in the Open Mic. So I called and sang on the phone and got a spot to perform on Saturday afternoon."

Well-known singers scheduled to perform there that week include Blake Shelton on Friday, July 20, and Toby Keith on Saturday, July 21.

"I's a big deal for country music. I am really excited .. it will still be a great experience," she says.

While most of her classmates know Moen as Liz or Elizabeth, many do call her by the name she will use at the Jones County Fair.

"Yea," she says, "Some people call me Lizzy and I figured it sounds cheery and happy."

Future plans

Like almost any singer who has stood before a crowd with a guitar in hand, Moen does dream a bit of the "big time."

But for now, she is happy to sing any place that people ask her to.

"Yes, I sing at a lot of family gatherings and get-togethers," she says. "Really anywhere people ask, I will sing and play guitar. It's something I love to do."

Concerning the future, Moen says, "Whereever life takes me I will hopefully still sing from time to time. Maybe one day I will try for the big time, but for now I just sing around the community, at home, and I actually sang today at my place of work. I work at Buffalo Wild Wings and one of my managers asked me to bring in my guitar, so I sang for my coworkers in the kitchen. It was a blast! Singing makes me happy and it seems to make my loved ones happy as well so it's just a win-win situation."
