Come in out of the rain this week for an old classic with a radical new twist!

“The Great Gatsby” in 3D plays the Palace Friday, May 31 through Thursday, June 6 at 7 pm, and Monday, June 3 at 2 pm.

The trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s Gatsby seems reminiscent of “Moulin Rouge!” his 2001 stunning and innovative musical portrayal of the Parisian Bohemian movement in 1899. Lurhmann blends his period stories with modern music and cinematic flourish.

If you somehow escaped the obligatory high school English reading of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic, or missed Robert Redford’s portrayal in 1974, here is a brief summary of the story.

"The Great Gatsby" follows aspiring writer Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loose morals, jazz, easy money, and bootleg liquor. Nick lands next door to mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), his cousin, the lovely Daisy (Carey Mulligan), and her cheating spouse, Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton).

This tale within a tale details the lives of the filthy rich, an impossible love, and the dreams, tragedy, and deceit woven throughout.

Rated PG-13 for violent images, sexual content, smoking, partying, and brief language, this romantic drama runs 143 minutes.

Critics surveyed on rottentomatoes.com praise DiCaprio, Mulligan and the talented cast, but pan Luhrmann’s directing. Audiences are more forgiving, rating this movie fairly high at 84%.

Trade in your umbrella and rain boots for pop and popcorn at the Palace!
