What We're Reading: Into the Uncut Grass

"Into the Uncut Grass" by Trevor Noah:This beautifully illustrated book by Trevor Noah brings out the playfulness we sometimes forget as adults. It is an easy and quick read with a friendly reminder to make time to be curious and open to others’ perspectives in life. Read along as this young boy and his bear Walter discover the importance of connection and compromise on their adventure Into the Uncut Grass.

What We're Reading: The Only Survivors

I recently read 'The Only Survivors' by Megan Miranda and it was a big miss for me. This book had a lot of potential with its large cast of characters to have more but it wasn't giving it. The book stayed very surface level, and I almost didn't finish it but what kept me intrigued was the then and now. Nine students survived a horrific accident in high school, and they made a pact to see each other every year for a reunion.

What We're Reading: Cabin 23 The Boo Hag Flex

All right, all of you readers out there, I've got something special this time! I just discovered a brand-new book, the first in a series, and I think you're going to love it. It is the perfect time of year for this story, but I'd like it any time.In the beginning, we find a short back-story about Cabin 23, just creepy enough to send a shiver up your spine.

Community Quilt Project

To encourage a sense of community and creativity, our library is holding a community quilt project. The blocks will be assembled into a finished quilt that will be auctioned off in the Spring/Summer of 2025. The proceeds from the auction will benefit future programming at the Vinton Public Library. We hope the project appeals to beginning quilters, experienced quilters, and everyone in between.

What We're Reading: Paper Boat

Fans of poetry will enjoy this collection that delves into themes of loss, yearning, and how time passes ever so quickly spanning a career of over 60 years. A few of my favorite poems from this collection are: 'Hesitations Outside the Door,' 'Three Praises,' and 'He Shifts from East to West' but you can't go wrong with this entire collection with a 4.

College Savings Program for Iowa Students and Parents Closes Soon

Iowa high school and college students, as well as their parents or guardians, have a chance at one of 45 awards deposited into an ISave 529 (formerly College Savings Iowa) account. The program is open to students in ninth through 12th grade and undergraduate college students who are Iowa residents.Registration for the ISL Education Lending Scholarship closes December 2.

What We're Reading: A wish in the dark

Children's literature contains some of my favorite adventure stories; Christina Soontornvat's novel 'A Wish In The Dark' is no exception! It's a retelling of Victor Hugo's 'Les Miserables' set in Thailand. We meet Pong, born into captivity in Namwon Prison, and Nok, determined to do what's right at all costs. A Newberry Honor Book, this is the perfect book to share with the young readers in your life.
