Shellsburg associate Nikki Rowe named ARC Paraeducator of the Year

Homecoming! Seniors begin week with traditional painting

The Vinton-Shellsburg Homecoming week is under way. The seniors began the annual celebration on Sunday evening at the high school, where they first painted the banners that will be hung in the windows of area businesses. They then "white-washed," painting the parking lot of the high school before emptying dozens of cans of spray paint on their grey sweatshirts and sweat pants.

Sept meeting NEWW

By Sydney Walton The September meeting of the North Eden Willing Workers was held on September 24 at Maquoketa Caves. The club arrived there and had a sack lunch provided by the club and then held a short meeting before exploring the caves. The items discussed were if a homecoming float was going to be in the parade this week. Unfortunately many members are involved in other activities and there will not be a float.

Area students accepted into the Wartburg Teacher Education Program

Thirty Wartburg College students were accepted into the Teacher Education Program. Those accepted include: Natalie Dudley of Walker Kassie Hennings of Dysart Trevor Krug of Dysart Each student had to demonstrate effective reflective components in teaching, pass the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators exam and complete several other requirements to be considered for the program.

Live to Ride the VanWey: Hundreds show love for local cancer patient

Riders gather around Scott VanWey after completing the nearly 140-mile ride in his honor on Saturday., Riders begin the morning, leaving from Vinton. Celebration Park was filled on Saturday with motorcycles and motorcyclists who had gathered to show their love and support for Scott and Becky VanWey, and to raise money for him with hours of music, an auction, and dinner that followed the ride.

Mount Mercy University congratulates Danielle Mikkola

Danielle Mikkola, of Watkins, earned a Bachelor of Business Administration, and graduated Cum Laude from Mount Mercy University in August 2017. Graduates were part of a spring commencement ceremony held in May. Located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Mount Mercy's 1,900 students come from around the globe, creating a vibrant, diverse and open-minded campus community.

VS FFA cow pregnancy check: Ag Lab offers another unique hands-on learning experience

The Ag Learning Lab at Vinton-Shellsburg High School brought agriculture students and FFA members another unique hands-on learning experience on Monday, when student Jakob Long brought in 6 heifers for a pregnancy wellness check.

Grace for Haiti: 2018 mission trip to focus on needs of young women

Aimee Redlinger and others plan to return to Haiti next year to focus on helping young women there. While on a mission trip to Haiti this past summer, Aimee Redlinger discovered late in the experience the reasons she believes she went: Helping the young girls of that poor, troubled and hurricane-damaged nation. Kathryn Wallin Named to Buena Vista University's Dean's List for Terms 5 & 6

Kathryn Wallin, of Dysart, was named to Buena Vista University's (BVU) Dean's List for terms five and six. Students named to the Dean's List must have a minimum grade point average of 3.5 for the two terms, based on a 4.0 grade point system, and must have taken at least 12 hours of coursework. Sophmores and Juniors to attend PSAT Informational Meeting

On Thursday, September 14, the sophomores and juniors will attend an informational meeting to acquaint them with a PSAT testing opportunity. The Pre-SAT test is an annual test to help students assess their college readiness and identify areas needing improvement as they prepare for the standard college entrance exams, the SAT and the ACT. As Juniors, students may also use their PSAT scores to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship competition.
