NCCC Oak 1 Helps Continue the Rebuilding Process of Detroit Post Flood

Hunter hammers sets for the furring strips to set in place the foam board By: April Mahaffey and Hunter Anderson AmeriCorps NCCC team Oak 1 is serving with All Hands Volunteer and Mennonite Disaster Services in Detroit Michigan until August 4. The team is assisting with mucking and gutting, and rebuilding basements. In two weeks the team has assisted with putting up foam boards, furring strips, draw wall and mudding and taping in the basement floor of one family’s home outside of downtown Detroit with All Hands.

Local students named to University of Iowa Dean's List

Knoll and Thorsvig announce Engagement and upcoming Wedding

Jason and Britton Lerch, Bill and Betty Thorsvig, of Vinton and Peggy Knoll of Amana, are pleased to announce the engagement of their children on June 18th, 2015. Taylor was a graduate of VSH in 2012. Anthony graduated in 2012.   Anthony is currently employed at Riverbend Plastics as a machinist.   Anthony Knoll and Taylor Thorsvig have announced their upcoming wedding on August 8th, 2015 at the Blessed Hope Church in Vinton.

Upper Iowa University announces 3 area 2015 graduates

Upper Iowa University is pleased to announce the names of its May 2015 graduates, followed by the degree earned. David Ervin of Vinton, IA, graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Conservation Mgmt. Braxton Morrison of Vinton, IA, graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. Valarie Pont of Dysart, IA, graduated with a Master of Business Admin in Organizational Devel Emphasis.

Brody family plans 100th reunion at St. Mary's in Urbana

Hugh and Joanna (Osborn) Brody established their homestead in Polk Township, just a couple miles south of Urbana, shortly after the Osborn family moved to the area in 1840.  Joanna Brody was the guest of honor at the annual family reunions, which were held in the Urbana area every summer beginning on August 24, 1916, with 125 family members in attendance.

Bricks from 1903 Center Point school available for purchase

The Center Point 1903 school building is gone to make way for improvements at the now Middle School.  But for many people the memories made in that old building will live on.  To help with the remembering, the Center Point Historical Society has bricks from the old school for sale. The salvaged bricks with an attached laminated plaque picturing and identifying the school and giving its dates sell for $20.

Union grad King interns for Speech/Language Center

In today's competitive job market, college students recognize the value of high-impact learning experiences and Augustana has helped them pursue these experiences through summer internships. More than 150 Augustana College students are completing summer internships across the globe including senior Kersten King from Dysart, IA majoring in communication sciences & disorders and communication studies.

NCCC Corps Class 21 Team Leader Spotlight: Ryan Van Winckle

Ryan Van Winckle from Queens, New York is serving on team Maple 5 in AmeriCorps NCCC Corps Class 21. He arrived in Vinton in January of 2015 to start her 11-month service term with the program. Maple 5 is made up of ten people from across the country who serve together around the Midwest. Prior to joining AmeriCorps NCCC he made a living working many odd jobs throughout New York City after he graduated college from the University at Albany in May of 2013.

Students earn Central College scholarships

The following area first-year students earned scholarships to Central College: Drew Kithcart of Atkins received a Presidential Scholarship to Central College. Katrina Langstraat of Vinton received a Cornerstone Scholarship to Central College. Taylor McGowan of Dysart received a Cornerstone Scholarship to Central College. Macy Miner of Van Horne received a Presidential Scholarship to Central College.
