NCCC team Cedar 3 of Vinton, Iowa is serving with the Toledo Botanical Garden and Toledo GROWS organizations in Ohio until June 11. Cedar 3 is helping bringing life back to gardens by weeding, installing raised beds, planting seasonal flowers, and shoveling compost.
Over the course of a few weeks Cedar 3 has assisted with cleaning ponds, installing and preparing garden beds in local community gardens throughout Toledo as well as painting.

When AmeriCorps NCCC team Oak 7 arrived at the University of Wisconsin (UW) Arboretum, they knew very little about native ecology. During this service project, Oak 7 has learned to recognize invasive plants such as Garlic Mustard, Yellow Rocket, Dame’s Rocket, and Honeysuckle which disrupt the food web by being inedible to insects.

Jaclyn Shear is originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and has recently been hired as the Community Relations Associate for the North Central Region.
She graduated in 2014 from Iona College in New Rochelle, New York with a degree in Mass Communications. As an active member of the campus body she served as a meteorologist, writer for the University paper and reporter for the local news station.

Upper Iowa University has released its 2014-15 Dean's List. To be honored, the undergraduate must have earned a minimum 3.50 GPA for the semester and be enrolled as a full-time student.

The week of June 7-13, 2015 has been proclaimed National Garden week by National Garden Clubs, Inc. This is a special week in which garden clubs are in the spotlight with activities focusing on public attention of the role which garden club members play in all phases of gardening.
The Cottage Garden Society has placed containers of flowers by the store fronts downtown for their annual fundraiser.

Loras College Provost Cheryl Jacobsen, Ph.D. has announced the names of students who achieved Dean's List status for the 2015 spring semester. A student must earn a 3.5 grade point average and carry a minimum of 12 credit hours to be recognized.

Jacob "Jake" Taylor from Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania is serving on team Oak 7 in AmeriCorps NCCC Corps Class 21. He arrived in Vinton in January of 2015 to start his 11-month service term with the program. Oak 7 is made up of nine people from across the country who serve together around the Midwest.
Before his term of service, he graduated from Hamilton College in 2014 with a bachelor of arts and a double major in Mathematics and Music.

AmeriCorps NCCC team Cedar 1 is assisting the Power of One Ministry in Flint, Michigan until June 11 to help diminish blight within the city. With the team’s help and the ambition of organization members, they are making an impact to improve the city and help with revitalization.
So far, Cedar 1 has assisted with cleaning out brush from vacant lots and houses.

Oak 6 began service on May 1 at the start of The Delano Farms growing season in Michigan. The farm has been in working order since 2011, when it was acquired by the Kalamazoo Nature Center (KNC). Oak 6 is learning that farmers work early and hard without a vacation. The team has spent four weeks seeding in the green house, planting vegetables rain or shine, and cultivating all of the rows that weeds try to overtake.

The Vinton Garden Club member of National Garden Clubs, Inc., District II and Central Region met Wednesday at 11:00 am May 27, 2015 at the 218 Roadside Park that the Garden Club maintains. Nine members attended the potluck, program, meeting and then scraping paint from post and shelter. Joyce Bratten gave the program on dividing perennials.
