Local students named University of Iowa On Iowa! student leaders

University of Iowa students from your area are among about 235 of their peers selected to serve as On Iowa! students leaders, charged with welcoming new first-year and transfer students this fall. On Iowa! student leaders are chosen after a competitive interview process. They are instrumental to the week-long program, which is designed to immerse new students in University of Iowa culture, underscore academic expectations, and teach UI traditions.

NCCC Maple 4 at Home at Flying Horse Farms

Jesse Crouch After two days of travel and over 10 hours in the “Golden Goose” (our affectionately named 15 passenger van) the weary but excited members of Maple 4 arrived on the grounds of Flying Horse Farms in Mt. Gilead, Ohio.  Flying Horse Farms (FHF) is an organization bringing severely ill children to camp free of charge.

NCCC Team Serves with YMCA Camp Nissokone

In that short time, much has been achieved as a result of the team's enthusiasm and hard work. Camp Nissokone was first built in 1914 on Lake Van Etten by the YMCA and encompasses 100 acres of land. The camp is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.

AmeriCorps NCCC Class 20 Corps Member Spotlight: David West

He arrived in Vinton on February 11 to start his 10-month service working with a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Cedar 3 is made up of nine people from across the country and they will serve together around the Midwest.

Thanks from VS FFA for labor auction support

On Thursday April 3, 2014 the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter had their annual labor auction. At 7 o’clock PM, many FFA member and community members came to the high school gym for our biggest fundraiser of the year. Each member that is sold, is sold for an 8 hour day of work to be done whenever the buyer calls them. This year, the chapter had a total of 47 freshman, sophomores, juniors, seniors, and advisors sold to a long list of community members and supporters of our chapter.

Kersten King named to Augustana Dean's List

A total of 858 students have been named to the Dean's List at Augustana College for the 2013 winter term. Students who have earned this academic honor have maintained a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher on a four-point scale for courses taken during the term. Kersten King from Dysart, Iowa, was among the students named to the winter term Dean's List.

Vinton Garden Club discusses best trees during monthly meeting

The Vinton Garden Club member of National Garden Clubs, Inc., District II, and Central Region met 11:30am  March 26, 2014 at Vinton Family Restaurant for lunch with Cam Wood as hostess. After lunch we went to Cam’s home for the meeting and program on,  “What are the best trees to plant?” by Jeff Schadle, Vinton Conservation Lead Person.

NCCC Cedar 6 Food For Thought

Kola & Brandon water the indoor garden to help prepare the seedlings to grow before transplanting By: Victoria Haddad AmeriCorps NCCC team Cedar 6 is serving with Matthew 25, Feed Iowa First and HACAP until May 1st. The team is assisting with planting vegetable seeds for local gardens. These seeds will eventually be harvested to help feed the Iowa low income residents in the community. So far Cedar 6 has assisted in planting 14,200 seeds in a hoop house.

State Treasurer Michael L. Fitzgerald just might have that unique gift for Mother's Day. Fitzgerald will be hosting his next unclaimed property eBay auction beginning on April 24. "We will have an assortment of items up for bid, perfect gifts for Mother's Day," Fitzgerald stated. "Our eBay auction will be filled with one of a kind items and unique collectibles that were turned over in unclaimed safe deposit boxes.
