We Just Had to Ask: Elementary Art Teacher Lindsey Otto

Art teacher Lindsey Otto helps prepare students for a project by reading a book about Australia. Lindsey Otto teaches art for all grades up through fifth at the Tilford and Shellsburg elementary buildings. She helps her students share their work through the VS Elementary Art Rooms Facebook Page.  Today, we help Mrs. Otto share some interesting information about her and her love of teaching art.  Q. VS FFA holds first Greenhand Night

For the first year ever, the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA chapter held a local Greenhand night for new FFA members on Tuesday October 1, 2013. “Greenhand” stands for a first year member in FFA, not necessarily just for the freshmen, though our night was not just limited to the first year members, anyone was welcome to come.

AmeriCorps NCCC Class 19 Corps Member Spotlight: Eric Docherty

Eric Docherty, from Hampton, Penn., is a member of Maple 3 in NCCC’s Class 19. He arrived in Vinton on February 5, 2013, to start his 10-month service term on a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Maple 3 is made up of 10 people from across the country, and they are serving together in a number of service projects across the North Central Region throughout their term.

AmeriCorps NCCC Cedar 2 team spends a week at camp

Cedar 2 poses on new playground equipment at one of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee. By Maryann Walbert AmeriCorps NCCC’s (National Civilian Community Corps) Cedar 2 spent week in Hartland, Wis. The team traveled south on September 18 from Red Cliff, Wis., hoping to improve the grounds of Camp Whitcomb/Mason, a camp serving the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee. The initial morning of the project consisted of meeting the camp’s full-time staff.

We Just Had to Ask: Tilford Kindergarten teacher Katie Harms

Katie Harms says a photo of her and fiance James Kuhn at the Ray House is her favorite photo. Katie Harms is a new teacher at Tilford Elementary, where she teaches alternative Kindergarten. However, she has been with the VS District since 2010, when she began as a Kindergarten teacher at Shellsburg Elementary.  Katie graduated from Mt. Mercy College with a Bachelor's of Science in Elementary Education with endorsements in reading and early childhood.

We Just Had to Ask: New VS Middle School teacher Alexa Francois

Alexa Francois' favorite pic of herself is her volleyball mug shot; she earned honors at Mt. Mercy. Alexa Francois is the new Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School Behavior Learning Center teacher. As a college student, she played volleyball at Mount Mercy, where she was the team MVP her senior year. She also earned All-Academic Awards as well as Team Spirit and Most Hustle Awards. Ms. Francois grew up in Dundee in northeast Iowa, and graduated from Starmont High School.

ISU Extension, VS FFA help with Farm Safety Day

On Saturday September 21, 2013, the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA helped out at the annual Farm Safety Day Camp, at the Vinton Fairgrounds. There were about 40 kids that came out to learn about farm safety. A few Vinton-Shellsburg FFA helped out with teaching hidden hazards on a farm, including PTO safety, lawn mower safety, and sun safety. Members also helped with being group leaders and serving lunch.
