AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps team Pine 4 wanted to get involved in the community as soon as they reached their third and final project round destination in Kansas City, Mo. so they contacted Hillcrest Transitional Housing before leaving Vinton, Iowa. Hillcrest Transitional Housing is a program that helps homeless families, singles and youth get back on their feet by offering free housing in exchange for participating in life skill classes designed to get the homeless back into the community.

Alyssa Valcourt, from Fitchburg, Mass., is the Team Leader for Oak 3 in NCCC’s Class 19. She arrived in Vinton on January 8, 2013, to start her 11-month service term leading a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Oak 3 is made up of 11 people from across the country, and they will serve together in a number of service projects across the North Central Region.

Nick Rossmiller, from Portland, Ore., is the Team Leader for Cedar 6 in NCCC’s Class 19. He arrived in Vinton on January 8, 2013, to start his 11-month service term leading a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Cedar 6 is made up of 11 people from across the country, and they will serve together in a number of service projects across the North Central Region.

Oak 7, a NCCC team, based out Vinton, Iowa, is at Lake Sherman YMCA Camp in Augusta, Michigan from March 11 to April 26. They are counselors for campers of the Kalamazoo area, with students ranging from 4th to 6th grade.
The NCCC team is working with underprivileged students of the community to help them build self-esteem and better their interaction skills, while allowing them to get out of the city and into the wilderness.

AmeriCorps NCCC team Cedar 6 is serving in Jackson, Michigan at the YMCA Storer Camps from Mar. 11 – Apr. 26.
During the team’s seven-week project, five weeks are dedicated to Lands for Learning projects. These projects include removing invasive species such as glossy buckthorn, honeysuckle, autumn olive, and garlic mustard from the camp’s 1200-acre property.

Mayor John Watson, along with more than 600 mayors across the country, are acknowledging the first-ever Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service on April 9, a nationwide bipartisan effort to highlight the impact of national service.
“National service is a vital resource for Vinton,” said Mayor Watson. “AmeriCorps members have a positive and lasting impact, making Vinton a better place to live.

Martha Mickelson, from Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, is the Support Team Leader for the Cedar and Hickory units in NCCC’s Class 19. She arrived in Vinton on January 3, 2013, to start her 11-month service term supporting a total of fourteen teams based out of the North Central Region.
“I needed a change in industry,” Martha said.

The AmeriCorps NCCC team of Maple 4 finished their work with the Northeast Iowa Food Bank in Waterloo, Iowa, last Friday and are now working on the second half of their project round in Des Moines.
The team left the NCCC Vinton campus on Monday, April 1, and is spending the next four weeks in Iowa’s capital city working with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Des Moines (GDM Habitat).

The Center Point Historical Society chose the Civil War as their museum and activity theme for 2013 but at its regular March meeting “partnering” turned out to run a close second.
Melissa Atkinson, city clerk, and Carrie Wilkinson of Center Point Economic Development attended the meeting. The Historical Society, at Melissa’s invitation, will be providing photographs and artifacts from the Museum collection for rotating displays at City Hall.
