AmeriCorps NCCC Class 19 Team Leader Spotlight: Andrew Golden

Name: Andrew Golden Hometown: Madison, WI Andrew arrived in Vinton on January 8, 2013 to begin his 11-month service as a Team Leader for NCCC’s Class 19. He will lead a team of 10-12 members on a number of service projects throughout the North Central Region starting mid-March.                   Andrew brings several skills to the team leader position.

James Leibold Earns Dean's List Honor at Illinois Central College

James R Leibold, of Newhall, IA, was named to the Dean's List at Illinois Central College for the Fall 2012 semester. The academic honor is presented to students who earn a 3.5 to 3.99 grade point average on a 4.0 grading scale.

FEMA Corps Class 19 Member Shea Douglas saw Katrina damage first-hand

Today we continue our FEMA Corps member spotlights, featuring Shea Douglas, who helped his brother at Loyola University deal with the damage and mess of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Name: Shea Douglas Hometown: South Burlington, Vt. Shea is serving as a member of the AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps team Hickory 4 at the Vinton Campus. While initially interested in the traditional NCCC program, he decided to participate in NCCC FEMA Corps because he wanted to be part of something new.

Malea Schulte Named to Dean's List at Saint Mary's College

Saint Mary's College, Notre Dame, IN, named Malea Schulte to the Dean's List for the fall 2012 semester. Malea is the daughter of Kevin and Kelynn Schulte of Norway, IA. To earn academic honors at Saint Mary's, a student must achieve a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.6 on a 4.0 scale, have at least 12 graded credit hours, no incompletes, and no grades lower than a C.

 Name: Sarah Dyer Hometown: Elmhurst, Ill. Sarah is serving as a member of the AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps team Pine 4 at the Vinton Campus. She learned about NCCC from a coworker who served last year at the Sacramento campus. Sarah chose to join NCCC FEMA Corps because she is passionate about service and thought it sounded like an ideal opportunity to gain new experiences and step outside her comfort zone.

Karleigh Miller Part of Winning Mock Trial Team

Karleigh Miller, a senior history and political science major from Keystone, Iowa, is a member of the Central College Mock Trial Team, which hosted an invitational event on campus Feb. 2-3. The team finished undefeated and won the tournament over second place Drake University and third place Loras College. In two weeks, Miller will compete with the rest of the team at the Cedar Rapids Regional Tournament, where the team could quality for the national mock trial tournament.

State Treasurer Michael L. Fitzgerald is advocating Iowans to take advantage of the benefits of College Savings Iowa to save for their loved ones future education expenses. "We want parents to know it's never too soon to start planning for their children's education," Fitzgerald said. "And as a way to encourage families to take the first step towards saving, College Savings Iowa is giving away a $5,290 account this spring.
