This year, four Vinton-Shellsburg High School choir students were selected for the Luther College Dorian Festival. Pictured, from left: Beth Sauer (12), Nick Gardner (12), Jacob Bunge (11) and Alyssa Cantrell (11), traveled to Luther College in Decorah on January 13-14.
They joined 1,200 other singers from across Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, and South Dakota to form the largest select honor choir in the country.

On Friday, January 11, the VSHS Chamber Singers competed at the Onalaska Classic Concert Choir Competition in Onalaska, Wisconsin. Schools from Wisconsin and Iowa performed throughout the afternoon and evening for a panel of three judges. This year, the Chamber Singers placed in 3rd place again 10 other competing schools. Schools are not divided by size and Vinton-Shellsburg was the smallest represented school that evening.

Name: Jeana DiBona
Hometown: Hanover, Mass.
Jeana is serving as a member of the NCCC FEMA Corps team Pine 2 at the Vinton Campus. She chose to participate in AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps because she wanted to take some time off from school after graduation to travel the country while helping people.
Jeana graduated from Hanover High School in June 2012 and started taking independent study courses through FEMA.

The 4th Street Diner meal on Sunday, January 20th, will be Roast Pork, Mashed Potato/Gravy, Spinach, Peaches, Custard, WW Bread, Milk.
On Monday, December 10th, the activity of the day was a Pepper Card Party. There were five tables of players. Frances Kelly won 1st place with 212 points. Dora Vogt and Margaret Fuehrer tied for 2nd place with 207 points.

Hometown: Kalamazoo, Mich.
Gabby is serving as a member of the NCCC FEMA Corps team Pine 1 at the Vinton Campus. She chose to participate in AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps because she wanted to explore new places, meet new people, and try new things while bringing resources and hope to people in need.
Gabby graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 2007 and the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and women's studies.

She chose to participate in AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps because she is very drawn to serving others and wanted to make a difference. She believes that a term of service will be very rewarding and contribute to her personal and professional development.

The Vinton Knights of Columbus recently completed the annual Persons With Intellectual Disabilities fundraiser in Vinton. Knights were stationed outside area Fareway, Theisen’s, Dollar General and Alco stores collecting donations and handing out Tootsie Rolls.

Vikes of the Week include:
Stevie Henry (nominated by Mr. Patterson). Before Xmas break we did the tie dye unit in Chemistry. The students were instructed to take their tie dyed clothing items home with the blizzard barreling down on us it was a pretty good chance we would not be here the next day and if the clothing did not get rinsed out it would bleed all the colors together and ruin the item.

At Iowa State University's fall 2012 commencement ceremonies, 1,708 students received degrees. Iowa State awarded 1,388 undergraduate degrees, 210 master's degrees, and 110 doctor of philosophy degrees.
Of the students receiving bachelor's degrees, 264 graduated "With Distinction" (cum laude, magna cum laude or summa cum laude).
