Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity Unites With AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps

 NCCC FEMA Corps Team Leader, Ashley Merchant, scales the brick tile to make sure it is even.   By: Laura Dennis   The National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) FEMA Corps team, Pine 3, united with the Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity (CVHFH) on September 20 and 21 for its first mini service assignment. Pine 3 worked with CVHFH on their “A Brush with Kindness” program doing exterior landscaping. “A Brush with Kindness” is a program run by the CVHFH that helps low-income homeowners by offering exterior home improvements.

  IOWA WELCOMES 230 FEMA CORPS MEMBERS AS THEY BEGIN TEN MONTHS OF SERVICE ASSISTING DISASTER SURVIVORS   Two-hundred thirty young adults from across the nation will be sworn in as members of FEMA Corps at an induction ceremony in Iowa today, providing a boost to the nation’s ability to assist disaster survivors while expanding career opportunities for young people.

State Treasurer Returns $150 Million Back to its Rightful Owners

State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald announced today that the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt has crossed a milestone. "I'm very excited to announce that since I created this program in 1983, we've returned $150 million through the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt," Fitzgerald said. "We will continue to reach out and reunite these assets with their rightful owners.

She chose to participate in AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps because she wanted to participate in a second term of service. She previously served as a NCCC member at the Vicksburg, Miss. Campus.

NCCC FEMA Corps Remembers 9/11 with Community Service Projects

 NCCC FEMA Corps team Hickory 3 and Site Supervisor Durango after their first Mini-Spike in Oelwein.    As part of 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance the NCCC FEMA Corps team Hickory 3 spent two days in Oelwein, Iowa making improvements to town parks and infrastructure.   During this project the team worked with Oelwein’s Parks and Recreation Department to spread over 250 cubic yards of mulch onto playgrounds in the city’s renowned City Park.

Vikes of the Week - Nathan Jelinek and Laquita Mull

Nathan Jelinek for Vike of the Week.( Mr. Vettraino)  He helped Tiffany Auen with a document she needed to print and was having problems with printing the background.  I was busy so he volunteered.  Then when she left he found her cellphone and tracked her down to give it to her. Laquita Mull- (community member nominated her)-  Was picking up trash in the school lawn and parking lot after the volleyball team had returned from a tournament.

Jesse received his Bachelor’s degree in Sociology with a minor in Geography from the University of Northern Iowa. He then received his Master’s in Organizational Leadership from St. Ambrose University.   Jesse has a background of diverse professional experiences dedicated to serving communities.

Jana brings negotiations skills, adaptability, self-reliance, independence, planning and budgeting skills to her team.

NCCC Explores the Natural World Inside Milwaukee

Milwaukee may be known for the Brewers and Harley-Davidson but there is something else extraordinary inside America's 28th-largest city: Trees and rivers are just as present as buildings and streets there. Milwaukee County is home to over 140 parks covering nearly 15,000 acres of land.   For seven weeks, AmeriCorps NCCC team, Oak 7, is working with the Milwaukee Parks and the River Revitalization Foundation (RRF).
