  Des Moines University (DMU) awarded 499 degrees at its 2011 Commencement service May 28 at 10 a.m. at the Iowa Events Center, 730 Third St. The dean from each of the three DMU colleges presented their classes and DMU president, Angela Walker Franklin, Ph.D., conferred degrees. Rebecca J Scheil Named to Northwestern College Dean's List

  Rebecca J Scheil, daughter of Wade & Kathleen Scheil of Vinton, was named with Highest Honors to the spring semester dean's list at Northwestern College in St. Paul, Minn. The dean's list includes full-time students with a grade point average (GPA) during the semester of 3.65 (out of 4.0) or higher.

Slide into the Pool with the Dinosaurs Memorial Day Weekend

The pool is now full of water that must be cleaned before anyone can swim. This means that the pool is on track to be opened Memorial weekend. The team this week painted the pool, the slide, the pool clubhouse, and many fixtures around the pool.

Aaron Bjornsen graduates during Culver-Stockton College Commencement

  Urbana native Aaron Bjornsenreceived a BA degree during the 155th Commencement held Saturday, May 21, 2011 on the campus of Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Mo. Bjornsen majored in religion & philosophy while attending Culver-Stockton. The commencement ceremony was held in Charles Field House on the campus of Culver-Stockton and featured noted historian and Abraham Lincoln expert Harold Holzer as keynote speaker.

Daniel Meeker Graduates from Creighton University

   Daniel Meeker of Vinton graduated from Creighton University with a Bachelor of Arts degree during the Commencement Ceremony held on Saturday, May 14, at the Qwest Center Omaha. Creighton University conferred the largest number of degrees ever at its May commencement – more than 1,500 – to students from 46 states and seven countries.

NCCC Makes a Mark on Muncie

  By Vanessa Jane Brown & Alexander Kemp  AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) team, Maple 2, is serving with Red Tail Conservancy and Muncie Delaware Stormwater Management (MDSM) in Muncie, Indiana, in an effort to save Camp Munsee, an educational woodland for the community. The effort entails the removal of hundreds of acres of Asian Bush Honeysuckle, an invasive plant species that threatens to wipe out Indiana’s native plant life.

Area Student to attend National event for Women Student Leaders

Haley Boeckmann     Vinton-Shellsburg alum and current UNI student, Haley Boeckmann, the daughter of Tom and Lisa Boeckmann of Vinton, will attend the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders in Maryland.      Haley was nominated for this conference by the RLC (residence life coordinator), and will be attending with one other student from UNI.

NCCC Lends Helping Hand at Scattergood Friends School and Coralville Lake

  By: Holly Elder and Megan Richards    AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) Oak 3 is helping staff at Scattergood Friends School and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the next eight weeks, May 5 - June 30. NCCC members are assisting Scattergood School staff with completing such tasks as maintenance and farm upkeep.

  Iowa N.E.W. Leadership is an intensive 5-day residential institute designed to empower women and increase the participation of underrepresented groups in all sectors of leadership. The Institute experience is built around a challenging curriculum that develops knowledge and skill in key areas, including: strategic communication, policy analysis, philanthropy, negotiation, community development, professional sustainability, relationship-building, productive engagement with difference, conflict and collaboration.
