AmeriCorps NCCC team Cedar 3 recently finished working with Central Rivers Farmshed in Stevens Point, Wis. The team was assisting the Farmshed in its efforts to restore three abandoned greenhouses and establish a better local food economy and an overall healthier community.

Cedar 3 cleared debris and clutter out of one whole greenhouse and made progress clearing the others. Members moved bricks, wire, lumber and broken glass, removed walls, filled in holes and leveled out the greenhouse floor. The biggest accomplishment was the complete removal of glass from one greenhouse. That’s over 2,100 sheets of glass!

On Friday, June 21, Cedar 3 volunteered at The Midwest Renewable Energy Fair, the largest renewable energy and sustainable living expo in the world! Volunteer opportunities included site security, ticket sales, grounds crew and greeting fairgoers.

The mission of the Farmshed, is to expand the connection between local residents and their food by providing opportunities for participation, education, cooperation and action to support a local food economy in Central Wisconsin. The Farmshed plans to offer classes to educate community members about local food networks and local eating, farmer capacity building, public markets and proper nutrition.
