Jessica Beck, from Ft. Wayne, Ind., is a member of Oak 4 in NCCC’s Class 19. She arrived in Vinton on February 5, 2013, to start her 10-month service term on a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Oak 4 is made up of eight people from across the country, and they are serving together in a number of service projects across the North Central Region throughout their term.

“After hearing what a friend had to say about his experience, I was very inspired and compelled to apply as soon as possible,” Jessica said. “I am a recent graduate and want to get more experience in the community service world, so this seems like a perfect way to do it. I was previously thinking about the PeaceCorps, but I believe this opportunity fits much more perfectly with my life right now.”

Jessica brings several skills with her to NCCC, which help her be successful throughout her term with the program. She has great leadership skills, which were developed through being a captain for athletic teams in high school, being a team leader for a student organization in college and by leading group projects throughout school. She is also an experienced digital photographer and knows how to use imaging software such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.

Prior to joining NCCC, Jessica was working two part-time jobs, one as a bartender and another at a tanning salon. She graduated from Ball State University in May 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in advertising. She also graduated from Bishop Luers High School in May 2008. After finishing the program, Jessica has her options pretty open. “I plan on not having a plan,” she said, “to just keep doing what I'm doing...living day by day.”

Oak 4 is currently working from July 15 to August 2 with Miracles in Motion in Swisher, Iowa. The team is assisting as side walkers and horse leaders in therapeutic riding classes. In addition, they are assisting with facility upgrades such as making upgrades to the sensory trail, painting the barn and horse shelters, and cleaning tack.
