Dylan Sharkey, from Granville, Ohio, is a member of Oak 6 in NCCC’s Class 19. He arrived in Vinton on February 5, 2013, to start his 10-month service term on a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Oak 6 is made up of seven people from across the country, and they are serving together in a number of service projects across the North Central Region throughout their term.
“My family and I felt I needed a year off of school work,” Dylan said, when asked why he joined NCCC. “I want to do something productive, challenging, life-changing, and a new experience with my time off. I like to help others and I like being able to explore the country.”
Dylan brings several skills with him to NCCC, which help him be successful in his role as a Corps Member. He is very good with tools, has a lot of energy and is committed. He is also very adaptable, fun and good with challenges.
Prior to NCCC, Dylan was working at a café in Philadelphia. He attended one year at Wittenberg University. He graduated from Granville High School in June of 2011. After finishing the program, Dylan plans to return to Wittenberg University and complete his college education.
Oak 6 is currently working from August 10 to September 26 with YMCA Metro Detroit in Oscoda, Mich. The team is involved in numerous activities at YMCA Metro Detroit’s Camp Nissokone’s Outdoor Education Program including replacing roofs on cabins, painting the exterior on cabins, removing downed trees along trails and camp property, and assisting in camping activities such as ropes course, climbing wall, and zip line when necessary.
