Jerez Norwood, from Rocky Mount, N.C., is a member of Maple 3 in NCCC’s Class 19. He arrived in Vinton on February 5, 2013, to start his 10-month service term on a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Maple 3 is made up of 11 people from across the country, and they are serving together in a number of service projects across the North Central Region throughout their term.

When asked why he joined NCCC, Jerez said it was “to enhance my skills and help out with my country.”

Prior to NCCC, Jerez was finishing up his second trade at Kittrell Job Corps, graduating in 2011 with a certificate in facilities maintenance. He also earned a certificate from the Home Builders Institute (HBI) in construction in 2010, and has two Osha certificates in construction and general industry. He earned his GED in 2010 from Edgewood Community College. After finishing the program, Jerez hopes to go on to college to earn a degree in either engineering or psychology.

NCCC isn’t the first service experience that Jerez has had. “I helped out working with the city of Rocky Mount when Hurricane Irene came,” Jerez said, “and helped clean out yards and repair homes.” Also, when he was learning his carpentry trade, he helped remodel apartments for the city.

Maple 3 is currently working from August 10 to September 26 with Jones County Conservation Board in Center Junction, Iowa. The team is assisting with preserving a natural area and they are removing brush at various properties owned by Jones County Conservation Board.
