Giovanna Flammia, from Braselton, Georgia, is a member of Maple 6 in NCCC’s Class 19. She arrived in Vinton on February 5, 2013, to start her 10-month service term on a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Maple 6 is made up of eight people from across the country, and they are serving together in a number of service projects across the North Central Region throughout their term.
“I choose to do a year of service because my passion to volunteer in my community has made me feel that I could learn more with AmeriCorps NCCC,” Giovanna said. Her mentor told her stories of how AmeriCorps members had worked with the humane society, and she decided it was something she really wanted to be a part of.
Giovanna, known to most as Gia, brings several skills with her to NCCC, which help her be successful throughout her term with the program. She has gained leadership experience through student government and dorm life. She also has practice helping and maintaining a positive image through the various organizations she has worked with in the past.
Prior to joining NCCC, Gia graduated from Jacksonville Job Corps Center in 2012 as a certified logistics associate and also gained a certificate in OSHA. She also graduated from Gibbs High School in 2010. After finishing the program, Gia plans on enrolling in the University of New Mexico in the communication department.
Gia volunteered at a two day event called Youth Explosion that really made a strong impression on her. On the second day, she greeted parents using the titles of “Mom” and “Dad”. “It really put on smiles to the mothers’ and fathers’ faces hearing it come out of my mouth. They said they were proud of those titles and stated it was a nice way that I greeted them. I come from a home where I did not grow up with my mom or dad. I lived with my aunt and uncle, so they were my parents.”
Maple 6 is currently serving from August 12 to September 26 with Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy (GTRLC) in Traverse City, Mich. The team is supporting the Grassland Restoration Project, Arcadia Marsh Restoration Project, and Public Access Program with GTRLC. They are also building trails and removing invasive species. The team is working in Benzie and Manistee Counties as well as Bellaire, Mich.
