AmeriCorps NCCC Team Maple 2 has served at Camp Nissokone, located near Oscoda, Mich. for three weeks.

In that short time, much has been achieved as a result of the team's enthusiasm and hard work. Camp Nissokone was first built in 1914 on Lake Van Etten by the YMCA and encompasses 100 acres of land.

The camp is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The purpose of the camp is to facilitate outdoor education programs. The outdoor education programs supplement classroom instruction through hands-on activities, such as nature hikes, orienteering and canoeing.

Over the last three weeks Maple 2 has restored two 26-foot canoes, assembled 20 picnic tables, built 19 bed frames, cleaned up a fallen tree, replaced windows in three cabins and removed three old showers. The team also did their first Independent Service Project (ISP) on March 29. The task was to clean up the brush from ash trees killed by the Emerald Ash Borer beetle, an invasive species native to Japan.

On April 4, the team arrived at Camp Ohiyesa in Holly, Michigan, their second project in this first round. The team is excited to get started on the new projects the camp has after the rewarding experience at Camp Nissokone, despite the challenges from the adverse weather and hard work. As Maple 2 team member Giovanna said, “Everything is possible in the right state of mind.” Maple 2 completes their service with Camp Ohiyesa on April 30, and returns to the Vinton campus.
