As you've probably all figured out, I came into this aspect of the "newspaper" business hesitantly. I love what you can do with technology when you can get it to do what you want, and that's where the problem probably lies.
But when you learn a new trick with this technology it's almost as thrilling as teaching your child to read.
Facebook was one of the last virtual territories that I wandered into because I didn't understand how it worked, still don't understand all the bells and whistles, but understand enough to look up long lost friends that I only call once every 2 or 3 years. It's also a way to be the little old lady on the party line. Or the nosy neighbor behind the curtain looking at what's happening in the neighborhood.
After a lot of prodding from my daughter, and co-workers, I took the leap.
When you can carve out time to just waste, and you have the computer all to yourself, you can travel all around the world.
You can look up your friends, look and see who their friends are, then if you want you can ask them to be your friend.
The funny realization I had this week is that while I love finding my long lost friends, I had only known for 3 years in college, sometimes I get a friend invite from people I've known for 30 years and am happy not inviting them to join me on facebook.
A few weeks ago, I did the whole nosy neighbor thing. I saw a name I recognized clicked on it and started looking through his pictures. I immediately asked if I could be his "friend" because I wanted to ask him if I could borrow his pictures :)
The pictures I am going to attach are courtesy of Tim Fuch, our local caretaker of Evergreen Cemetery. I only knew his name from ordering a gravestone and having to call him a year or so ago. Anyway, these are pictures of Vinton, a LONG time ago.
Tim was kind enough to give me permission to use them here today.
These are like finding that old friend using this new technology. Like those old friends, you just sit and stare at the pictures and remember all those moments in time and and all the fun you had together!
So courtesy of Tim, Facebook, and technology, enjoy these moments from the past!
Note: If anyone out there has more pictures on your computer (or facebook page) you can send them to me (or tell me where they are on facebook) and we'll be glad to upload them here on our own sort of community scrapbook of Vinton!
