Kathrine Hamilton, from Augusta, Georgia is serving on team Oak 3 in AmeriCorps NCCC Class 20. She arrived in Vinton on February 11 to start her 10-month service term. Oak 3 is made up of seven people from across the country who will serve together around the Midwest.
Kathrine says “I wanted to try something new, have some sort of impact in communities, and broaden my educational and work experiences.”
Before Kathrine joined the NCCC program she was in college finishing up her BS degree of Health Sciences
Oak 3’s third round project is at Michigan DNR Parks and Recreation, in Traverse City/Carp Lake, MI
Oak 3 will assist park staff in the following areas: invasive species removal, trail maintenance, picnic table repair, painting projects, installation of boundary signs, and cutting and splitting of firewood. Members will also assist in the supervision and leadership of “extended work projects” at Traverse City and Wilderness State Parks. All of the projects planned for the overnight work experience will be “Environmental Stewardship and Conservation” oriented. NCCC team and Summer Youth Employment Program participants will work on projects such as invasive species removal and trail maintenance.
