AmeriCorps NCCC team Cedar 3 is serving with the Toledo botanical garden/Toledo Grows in Toledo Ohio The team is assisting with various aspects of the Toledo botanical garden/Toledo Grows harvesting crops, removing invasive species and weeds.
So far, Cedar 3 has harvested crops such as Bell Peppers, cumbers and much more. Cedar 3 has removed invasive species in both Toledo botanical garden/Toledo Grows to allow more desirable plants to take their place. Cedar 3 has also helped with the removing of weeds allowing the native plant species to regain their full nutrients.
“As a non-profit organization, we rely heavily on resources like AmeriCorps NCCC to help make our community garden a success,” said Evon, Director at Toledo Grows. “AmeriCorps NCCC adds value in so many ways- by removing invasive species from the grounds allowing more appealing plants to take their place, to allow the native plants to grow to their full potential and helps out with other needs the garden has.”
Toledo Grows/Toledo Botanical garden mission is to allow healthy eating for the people of Toledo by providing affordable produce prices and to educate the people on basic farming skills so they may one day start their own garden. They also aim to provide a safe haven for the visitors to express themselves or to just take in the beautiful surroundings at no cost at all.
