Et cetera : AmeriCorps NCCC Class 20 Corps Member Spotlight: Zach Young

Zach Young, from Vashon, Washington is a corps member for Maple 4 in AmeriCorps NCCC Class 20. He arrived in Vinton on February 11 to start his 10-month service working with a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Maple 4 is made up of six people from across the country and they will serve together around the Midwest.

When asked why he decided to serve in the NCCC program, Zach says, “I like the variety of service projects I will be doing, I like the idea of serving my community and learning new skills that I might want to pursue after the program.”

Before Zach became a NCCC service member he was going to school and working.

Maple 4’s fourth round project is at the North Point Recreation Area, in Lake Andes, South Dakota.

Maple 4 will be assisting North Point Recreation Area with the clearing of unwanted and invasive trees. By clearing many of these trees, it will allow for the native prairie to thrive as well as clear a way for a paved trail that will allow the nearby residents a safer place to walk.

Q: What is your favorite TV show and why? Game of Thrones, because the character development and dialog is second to none.

Q: What is one place you would really like to visit? The ancient Buddhist in Thailand.

Q: If you could have a superpower what would it be? Telekinesis, because I could control things with my mind

Q: If you could come back as an animal which animal would it be? Orca Whale

Q: What did you want to be when you grew up? A navy seal or doctor

Q: What is the most challenging/exciting thing you’ve ever done? I have submitted Mt Adams. The second highest mountain in Washington.
