Vinton-Shellsburg High School student Caitlin Martin, the daughter of Dave and Cindy Martin, was among the 500 students from Iowa and throughout the nation who were recently invited to be honored at The University of Iowa Belin-Blank Center's Recognition Ceremony. Additionally, recognized students were given the opportunity to honor a teacher they credited for having a profound influence on their lives. Caitlyn chose VSHS science teacher Jon Temple.
The ceremony was held Sunday, October 5, at the Iowa Memorial Union on the University of Iowa campus.
Students were invited to be recognized by the Center for exceptional performance in the Belin-Blank Center student talent search, for receiving scholarships for Belin-Blank Center summer residential gifted programs, for being meritorious awardees at the 2014 Invent Iowa State Invention Convention, for being gold key awardees from the 2014 Scholastics Art and Writing program, for being a student research presenters at the 2014 Iowa Junior Science and Humanities Symposium, or participants in the 2014 Secondary Student Training Program.
Addressing the students, teachers and guests was The University of Iowa President Sally Mason, Dr. Christopher Morphew for the College of Education, and a video from Senator Charles Grassley. Ms. Teresa Mangum, delivered the keynote address to teachers and Mr. Yeltsin Rodriguez delivered the keynote address to the students.
