AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) team Maple 3 completed their first project with NCCC at the Flat Rock YMCA camp in St. Paul, Indiana. The team of ten spent four weeks helping out the camp. Wood chipping, stump grinding, ice blasting and staining furniture were some of the tasks the team worked on. In addition, Maple 3 assisted the camp staff with the construction of a handicap accessible tree house.
Maple 3 grinded 142 stumps and spread 60 loads of wood chips throughout the campground. They also ice blasted 40 boards. A few of the team members used their newly learned belay skills to facilitate a zip line and a climbing tower for a group of retreaters.
Gleaner’s Food Bank had Maple 3 sort bulk donated food items into bags. This created a nutrient bridge for children who do not get what they need at home.
Maple 3 returned to the campus in Vinton on April 6 where they spent a few days preparing for their next project in Dakota Dunes, South Dakota. They are currently assisting Lutheran Socials Services of South Dakota and the Salvation Army with flood recovery efforts until April 27, 2012 when they are returning to the Vinton campus.
