The Iowa Braille swimming and forensics teams traveled to Faribault, Minnesota, April 27-29 to compete in the North Central Association of the Blind’s conference meet. Eleven states were represented in this competition.
Students competing in swimming were Lauren Berglund, Breanna Sheridan, Alexis Long, Adam Morgan, Terrance Hughes, and Alex Gillaspie. Their coach is Lisa Lutz Crookshanks. The girls’ team earned the 4th place trophy. The boys finished in 6th place and the teams combined for a 4th place finish. Iowa remains undefeated in the co-ed relay (Berglund, Morgan, Sheridan, Hughes) and set a new conference record with a time of 2:42.
Iowa’s forensics team, coached by Deb Wilberg, tied for 2nd place in the best finish Iowa has ever had. Terrance Hughes placed 1st in Great Speeches, Lauren Berglund wrote her own speech and placed 2nd in the 8-Minute Speech. Jonathan Lee doubled, placing 2nd in both Humorous Prose and Serious Interpretation. Kenzie Buck, a first-time participant, placed 4th in Poetry Reading.
Next year the teams will be traveling to Nashville, Tennessee.
