Andrea Evans arrived at Tilford Elementary on Friday to pick up her son, Kail.
"Sit down," said her son's teacher.
Andrea did. Her son then stood next to her, a paper in hand. He read it to her. It was a description of how much he appreciates his mom.
Evan was one of the winners of the the Vinton Parks and Recreation's Mother's Day Essay contest. He is in Mrs. Mathis' first grade class. He is also one of several area children who moved their mothers to tears with the sweet words they wrote about them.
The Vinton Parks & Recreation Department offers this essay contest each year for kids in grades 1-5 Essays were submitted and then judged by several volunteers from the community. Judges viewed each entry prior to seeing the names of the child. First place winners were presented with a rose for their mom from Nature’s Corner Flower Shop, and their award-winning essay was laminated.
