Editor's Note: Here is information on another member of AmeriCorps living this year in Vinton while serving Americans in several states: Name: Katherine Parker Hometown: Carmel, California Katherine is currently serving as a member of Maple 5 with AmeriCorps NCCC at the Vinton Campus. Katherine brings many skills to her team including being a good leader, team player, the ability to connect with others and time management. She also brings an interest and knowledge of nutrition and exercise. Service has always been a part of Katherine’s life. She was involved with PETRA, a campus volunteer club as well as working at a day care for six years. Katherine joined NCCC because she wanted to continue to serve communities and live the simple life. Choosing to do a year of service, means fully giving herself to volunteering, removing the concerns of housing, money and the everyday stresses of life. Katherine graduated from Carmel High School in June 2007 and California State University, Long Beach in December 2011 with her BA in Philosophy. After her term of service, Katherine does not have any concrete plans; however she is considering traveling to Australia or Bali, joining World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF), training to become an Alaskan tour guide or going back to school to obtain her second BA in Psychology. Katherine and her team are currently serving in Upham, N.D. with the Souris River Basin Complex managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The team is performing prescribed burns as well as fencing, chain sawing and replacing signage. Before this project, Maple 5 was in Wapello, Iowa working with the Louisa County Conservation Board.
