AmeriCorps NCCC’s Oak 2 is currently working at the Science Station located in the Lindale Mall in Cedar Rapids. They are helping out with a series of summer camps that make science, technology, engineering and math fun and easy to learn. Since June 8, Oak 2 has worked with about 275 kids in classes such as Storybook Science, Robotics Rules, Safari Science, Junior Vets, Icky Sticky Science, Fitness Fanatics and Math Detectives. A few members of the team have also been trained to facilitate air pressure experiment demonstrations four times per week for groups visiting from outside camps. By assisting the teachers in the camp classrooms as well as completing administrative duties, marketing functions, and handling of daily operations, the NCCC team is helping to ease costs for the Science Station and to allow those teachers more time to improve their lesson plans. The Science Station began in 1985 as a function of the Junior League, with a mission of providing engaging and exciting learning opportunities through hands-on experiences. They serve children and families throughout the year with a variety of programs including an exhibit gallery, field trips and school outreach and birthday parties. Their emphasis on summer camps serves to bridge the learning gap that most kids face during the summer months. NCCC members are also working with other local organizations such as Relay for Life, Shellsburg Elementary School, The Iowa Children's Museum and the Vinton Park and Rec’s Party in the Park. At Shellsburg Elementary, team members painted a map of the United States and some hopscotch and four square games on the black top as well as constructing benches for the playground.
