Grand View University Commencement Held; John Bachman Keynote Speaker Des Moines, IA. The students(s) listed below received baccalaureate degrees at Grand View University (Des Moines, Iowa) commencement ceremonies held on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Hy Vee Hall in the Iowa Events Center, 730 3rd Street, downtown Des Moines. John Bachman was the keynote speaker and Grand View conferred upon Bachman an honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters, at commencement. John Bachman came to WHO-HD in 1987 to anchor Channel 13 News. Today he continues to anchor Channel 13 News at 6 and 10. In 2006, he was inducted into the Silver Circle of the National Television Academy - the most prestigious acknowledgement of a career in broadcasting. This national honor recognizes the inductee's contributions to the television industry and to the community. Bachman also received the prestigious Jack Shelley Award in 2005 - the Iowa Broadcast News Association's highest honor. Other achievements include the Alfred I. DuPont - Columbia University silver baton for documentary work at KARE-TV in Minneapolis, several regional Emmys for best newscast at WHO-TV, a national Emmy finalist for public service at KARE-TV, and numerous AP and NBNA first place awards for reporting in Iowa and Minnesota. Bachman anchored the WHO-TV 10 p.m. newscast that won the 2006 Edward R. Murrow national award for best newscast in television markets 51 and above. He has interviewed five presidents, including Ronald Reagan and President Clinton in the White House the day of the Oklahoma City bombing. As a reporter for WMAQ-TV in Chicago, Bachman covered the first Mayor Richard Daley. While reporting for KARE-TV, he broadcast live from the New York City harbor during the 1986 Statue Of Liberty Centennial Celebration. In Des Moines, he co-moderated a nationally broadcast Republican presidential debate with NBC's Tom Brokaw and appeared on Meet the Press. Bachman reported nearly around the clock during the Persian Gulf War, the Floods of '93, and the September 11 attacks. During his tenure, WHO-HD became number one in the ratings for the first time in the station's 50-year history. A graduate of Waverly-Shell Rock High School, Bachman received his B.A. cum laude from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., and pursued graduate studies in theology at Oxford University in England and Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minn. He started his career at WMT-TV (now KGAN) in Cedar Rapids in 1972. He has published two books: "In the News Tonight" (Augsburg Fortress Press), with the foreword written by veteran NBC anchor and colleague Tom Brokaw, and "Beyond the Facts" (Kirk House Publishers). Bachman married his wife, Barb, in 1972; they reside in Johnston and are active in church, civic and charity organizations. Bachman is a past member of the Grand View University Board of Trustees. Their son, John, is an early evening anchor at WSB-TV in Atlanta, Ga., where he and his wife, Jen, enjoy their three young daughters. Bachman's daughter, Alison, lives with her husband, Steve, and young son in Minneapolis, Minn. Grand View University, with an enrollment of approximately 2,000 students, is an independent, liberal arts college affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Recognition for outstanding academic achievement has been given to the following Grand View University student for the 2012 spring semester. The students are named to the President's List for earning a grade point average of 4.0 while carrying at least 12 hours of classes.
