NCCC team, Maple 1, arrived in Michigan to work with the Marquette County chapter of Habitat for Humanity and has been hard at work since September 12. From day one, they have hit the ground running with work at three different Habitat homes, all in different stages of building development. Maple 1 started their project working primarily on vinyl siding, deck construction as well as completing the roofs ventilation system. Due to inclement weather, the team moved the work indoors on a home further along in the building process. Here, it became evident how valuable eleven extra bodies were for tasks, as the painting of the entire house was finished in two days. The beauty of this construction project has been the variety of work the team has been a part of. The team has learned everything from installing window trim, piecing together laminate flooring, and new construction terms such as plumb (which means vertically level). In addition, Maple 1 has tarred and covered the foundation in foam insulation and began subflooring. As Maple 1 enters the final four weeks of work in Michigan the team hopes it has enough time to finish as much work on the homes as possible but is enjoying the precious moments still left in their term of service with each other in such a gorgeous portion of the state of Michigan.
