Sergio Tundo of Wayne, N.J., is serving as a member of the NCCC FEMA Corps team Pine 1 at the Vinton Campus. He chose to participate in AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps because he wanted to do some good in the world while taking a break from school. Community service has been a driving force in his life since middle school where he was active in the youth division of the Lions Club and organized his high school’s American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life events. He says, “I have…learned that I am a very fortunate person in my own life, so there is absolutely no reason for me to not put all my efforts into helping others.”

Sergio graduated from Wayne Valley High School in 2011 and attended the County College of Morris. After his service term ends he plans to return to school and complete a degree in psychology.

During his junior year in high school Sergio traveled to Europe with the People to People program, which provides students with travel experience to foster a global worldview. Through the program he visited Greece, Italy and France. In Italy he worked with disabled children at an orphanage. He says, “It was such a rewarding experience that I knew helping others was my calling.”
