Amanda Malady of Lafayette, Ind., is serving as a member of the NCCC FEMA Corps team Spruce 7 at the Vinton Campus. She chose to participate in AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps because she had a gap year before starting nursing school and wanted to do something productive and good for the country in the meantime.
Amanda graduated from Jefferson High School in 2008 and Indiana University in 2012 where she majored in human biology. After her service term ends she hopes to either find a job or attend nursing school in Lafayette, Ind.
During her senior year of college, Amanda served as the group leader for a spring break Habitat for Humanity build trip in York, Pa. She says, “It was a rather amazing experience. I enjoyed building a home for a family and seeing their faces when they saw the finished project.”
Amanda and her team are currently serving on their final project in location Fort Worth, Texas after spending the last two rounds in New Jersey and New York working on the Hurricane Sandy response with FEMA. They will return to Vinton, Iowa in June for graduation.
