Corey Kaye, from Philadelphia, Penn., is a member of Oak 3 in NCCC’s Class 19. He arrived in Vinton on February 5, 2013, to start his 10-month service term on a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Oak 3 is made up of nine people from across the country, and they are serving together in a number of service projects across the North Central Region throughout their term.

“I feel like everyone should experience a year of service helping others,” Corey said. “It will teach me new skills that I can utilize in the future. Travel is also a big part of why I chose to do this. There are so many different cultures within our own nation; we tend to forget we only experience the one we grow up with.”

Corey brings several skills with him to NCCC, which help him be successful in his role as a Corps Member. He has a strong willingness to learn and an ability to adapt to new situations.

Prior to NCCC, Corey was working as a personal care assistant for preschool-aged children. He graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in human development and family studies. He also graduated from George Washington High School in 2007. After finishing the program, he hopes that his experience will help point him toward what he wants to do.

Oak 3 just finished a project that ran from July 15 to August 1 with St. John’s Abbey Arboretum in Collegeville, Minn. Oak 3 assisted the arboretum with the installation of a fence to keep deer out of a 19 acre section of forest. This prohibits deer from causing damage to the oak trees.
