Austin Burke, from Fenton, Mich., is a support team leader for the Pine unit in FEMA Corps’ Class 20. He arrived in Vinton on July 22, 2013, to start his 11-month service term of providing administrative support to the Pine unit in addition to leading teams when needed. He chose to serve in the FEMA Corps program because he wanted to volunteer in the unique field of emergency management, travel the country, earn an education award and develop his leadership skill and serve with a diverse and eager group of young people.
Austin has several skills that he brings with him to the support team leader position including people management, problem solving and leadership. These skills will come in handy as he supports Pine unit teams through the various projects they will take on throughout the year.
Prior to joining FEMA Corps, Austin was attending college where he worked in the dining hall and served as the president of the basketball club. He graduated from Fenton High School in 2008 and Michigan Technological University in 2013 with a degree in biological science and biochemistry and molecular biology. After completing his term of service, he hopes to attend medical school.
