Et cetera : AmeriCorps NCCC Class 19 Corps Member Spotlight: Xzavier Wilson

Xzavier Wilson, from Cleveland, Ohio, is a member of Maple 1 in NCCC’s Class 19. He arrived in Vinton on February 5, 2013, to start his 10-month service term on a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Maple 1 is made up of 10 people from across the country, and they are serving together in a number of service projects across the North Central Region throughout their term.

“I chose to do a year of service with AmeriCorps NCCC because I want to make a difference in a community,” Xzavier said. “I am eager to problem-solve and work hard with (my) team, because the reward of seeing what we will accomplish after a year will be more than fulfilling. It will be life-changing, something that I will put in my heart as well on my Facebook status, because I believe that an accomplishment like that is something to brag about.”

Xzavier brings several skills with him to NCCC, which helps him be successful throughout his term with the program. He is positive and determined, with a desire to connect with people on an interpersonal level. He has a number of different business-related skills such as marketing, customer acquisitions and consumer relations. He is also not afraid to take on the issues that most people avoid.

Prior to NCCC, Xzavier had attended two years at the University of Akron studying business. He graduated from Saint Martin de Porres High School in 2010. After finishing the program, Xzavier plans to go back to college.

Maple 1 is currently serving from August 10 to September 26 with Camp Echoing Hills in Warsaw, Ohio. The team is assisting in the building and improvement of the Camp Echoing Hills challenge course, as well as creating wheelchair accessible walkways to get to each challenge course element. Maple 1 is a part of the planning process when it comes to the layout of the challenge course and is participating in building new elements with their current camp/maintenance staff.
