Et cetera : AmeriCorps NCCC Class 19 Corps Member Spotlight: Michael Pritchett

Michael Prichett, from Boise, Idaho, is a member of Oak 3 in NCCC’s Class 19. He arrived in Vinton on February 5, 2013, to start his 10-month service term on a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Oak 3 is made up of nine people from across the country, and they are serving together in a number of service projects across the North Central Region throughout their term.

“I love to help, and that is why I decided that AmeriCorps NCCC is the best step for me at this moment in my life,” Michael said. “I've learned that the jobs helping people are my calling. I was not interested in college straight out of high school.”

Michael brings several skills with him to NCCC, which help him be successful throughout his term with the program. He was a developmental therapist for Fellowship DDA, and thus has experience in counseling, teaching, and youth development. He is CPR and First Aid certified, was on honor roll in high school, and maintained a 3.0 grade point average.

Prior to NCCC, Michael was working at a grocery store and learning customer service skills while being introduced to all kinds of new people. He graduated from Eagle Academy High School in 2007. After finishing the program, Michael hopes to find more opportunities to better himself and better serve his country.

Oak 3 is currently serving with Sherman Lake YMCA in Augusta, Mich. from September 4 to 27. The team is serving as cabin leaders for school groups in which they will assist in their Integrated Education program. They are learning to lead activities as needed, provide a positive atmosphere while serving as an overnight cabin counselors and guide children to and from different camp activities. They are helping reinforce qualities such as honesty, respect, caring, and responsibility.
