Evan McGloin, from Guilford, Conn., is the team leader for Pine 2 in AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps’ Class 20. He arrived in Vinton on July 22, 2013, to start his 11-month service term leading a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Pine 2 is made up of ten people from across the country and they will serve together on emergency management and long-term recovery projects with FEMA.

When asked why he chose to serve, Evan says, “Service has always been a large part of my life, dating back to my involvement in the Boy Scouts of America. After graduating college I was unready to pursue a full-time career-type job and was unready to pursue graduate school, so spending a year doing service seemed a good fit.”

Prior to joining FEMA Corps, Evan was working full-time in retail. He graduated from Guilford High School in 2007 and received his bachelor’s degree in social work from Marist College in 2012. After completing his term of service, he plans to pursue another service opportunity or attend graduate school for a master’s degree in social work.

Evan’s work with children suffering from severe medical needs, emotional and behavioral disorders and histories of abuse has had a big impact on his life. These experiences have also provided him with skills in conflict resolution, adapting to rapidly escalating personal crises, and supporting survivors of traumatic experiences, which will come in handy as he manages a team through the projects they will complete throughout the year.
