Rick Primmer, a proud Vinton grandfather, shared with us the story of how his grandson Sam, a Boy Scout, led the campaign to have new flags placed in each of the classrooms of his new school in Ankeny.

Rick hopes that a similar effort will take place in Vinton.

"Our Grandson, Sam, undertook this project after the new school opened up in Ankeny. His Dad, Tom, is our oldest son, born and raised here in Vinton. Sam was not having much luck with his Scout project, raising funds for American Flags in each class room in the new building, plus large flags for auditorium etc. When Sam called his Grandma Primmer (Pamela) he was really down, that's when she made the first purchase to get the ball rolling. Sam is now working to provide a State of Iowa flag for the rooms as well," says Rick. Local schools Rick also has noticed that Vinton could benefit from such a campaign. "It wasn't until this week that I learned that our own Vinton-Shellsburg High School is lacking American and State flags in our classrooms," he said. "What a project that would make, not just for one individual, but how about a graduating class, or a school group, service organization or a veterans group, just to name a few. How about a challenge to these groups to work together to promote a little American pride. If one 16 year old boy can see a need and do something about it, how about a whole group or community?" Rick asks.
