Stevvahn Woodruff, from Walden New York, is serving on team Oak 1 in AmeriCorps NCCC Class 20. He arrived in Vinton on February 11, to start his 10-month service term. Oak 1 is made up of nine people from across the country who will serve together across the Midwest.
Stevvahn says, “I joined to better myself, life, and to find out what I want to do or become in life.”
Before joining AmeriCorps NCCC Stevvahn was going to school and working two jobs.
Oak1’s first round project is at the YMCA Storer Camps, in Jackson, Michigan.
Oak 1 is assisting in the Lands for Learning program in which they are removing invasive species from the land that the camp uses as an outdoor classroom. Oak 1 is also having the opportunity to lead educational invasive species removal sessions with students in which they are educating the community on proper techniques to remove invasive species. The team is also serving as cabin leaders for school groups (typically 5th and 6th graders) for one week.
