Two high school juniors have been chosen to represent East-Central Iowa Rural Electric Cooperative in Washington, D.C., June 12 to June 18. The two winners, Bristian Gerber and Zachary Fischels, will visit historical sites, spend a day on Capitol Hill, meet congressional leaders, and more. They will join approximately 1,500 other youth who are also sponsored by their RECs.
Bristian Gerber attends Vinton-Shellsburg High School and is the daughter of Shawn and Tom Gerber of Vinton. She participates in cross country, cheerleading, track, and the Voyagers dance team. In addition to volunteering for many different services and organizations, Bristian maintains an honor roll status, is a member of the National Honor Society, and is a member of St. Mary’s Church.
Zachary Fischels is an Independence High School junior and the son of Dan and Jane Fischels of Independence. Some of Zach’s school activities include marching band, concert band, jazz band, and the tech team. Zach holds a grade point average of 4.0, and he is a member of St. John’s Catholic Church.
In addition to their dream of visiting Washington, D.C., both juniors have a deep interest in government and politics. Congratulations Bristian and Zach—we look forward to hearing about your experiences in the nation’s capital!
