As Cedar 4 continues serving with their second round project at the Headwaters Science Center and the Bedmidji Community Food shelf, members are excited to see how their efforts have begun to impact the community in Bemidji, Minnesota.
The first few weeks of service work at the center involved a variety of tasks such as handling animals, educating youth, and cleaning. The team has accomplished many goals by educating the community about the natural sciences, managing and leading exhibits, and improving overall efficiency of the science center.
Cedar 4 also spends their time serving at the Bemidji Community Food Shelf by planting food, cleaning, managing inventory, and repackaging goods. In addition, the team has planted vegetables in an urban garden, planted trees and built raised mulch beds.
“It has been a joy to be able to serve these two great organizations. We have been able to witness how important they are to this community and it is very rewarding be a part of that,” says Cedar 4 member Courtney.
Outside of their service project, the team has spent time exploring the community. These excursions included visits to downtown, The Minnesota Nice Café, and the shores of Lake Bemidji.
The Headwaters Science Center’s mission is to provide educational enjoyment for children, adults, and educational organizations in Northern Minnesota using hands-on science and technology exhibits and programs. The mission of The Bemidji Community Food Shelf is to provide emergency food to families or individuals who have short-term, emergency food needs. The services of the food shelf provide members of the community who are living in poverty accessibility to affordable and locally grown produce along with home cooking skills.
