Former Vinton-Shellsburg Viking and Vinton resident John W.D. Lippmann graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy on April 16.
His Class, the 267th Basic Unit, completed its 14-week training at the ILEA’s Camp Dodge, in Johnston on April 14; graduation took place at the Iowa National Guard Freedom Center.
John earned the award for the 300 Point Club; and the 267th is proud that they have the most graduates (15) in the history of the academy’s classes that earned this award.
The purpose of the 300 Point Club according to the ILEA is to: “recognize officer athletes who excel in the physical training program. Physical fitness is a key concern to law enforcement and society. Criteria for this recognition requires the officer to run the one and a half mile course in nine minutes or under, perform 20 or more pull-ups and perform 80 or more sit-ups in two minutes or less. All of which are a testament to the physical condition of those who earn this award.”
John also earned a spot on the plaque at ILEA for Excellence in Firearms Marksmanship. His class was congratulated for their charity work for Youth Shelter Services and for funds raised for the families of the two fallen police officers in Des Moines.
During the training academy, recruits live in dorms at Camp Dodge, Monday through Friday. They are schooled in virtually every aspect of law enforcement, including:
- Vehicle patrol
- Strategic vehicle maneuvers
- Defensive tactics
- Firearms training
- Criminal law
- Traffic law
- CPR and first aid
- OWI enforcement
- Accident investigation
- Identity theft
- Community leadership
To graduate from the academy, recruits not only have to pass all the knowledge-based classes and physical training, but also daily inspections of their living quarters.
John is a police officer of the Iowa Falls Police Department. John, a 2011 VS graduate who played baseball and basketball and was involved in drama, joined the Iowa Falls PD in September, 2015.
